my grandfathers birth cert does not give a fathers name,we in the family know the family history concerning this, what i would like to ask is this....in the paragraph on the birth cert where it says "fathers name added after reg " my cert has a line across it,does that mean fathers name has or has not been given after reg?.thanks.x

it normally means the mother wouldn't or couldn't name the father.
for whatever her reasons were.the is no way of finding out who he really was.

Is this UK?...What year please?
I don't have any certs. which have a printed paragraph saying that.

If the fathers name had been given after registration, then the original birth certificate would have been amended and superseded. Only certs with the new information are issued after.

Sometimes (but not always) there is a hand written note in the birth index to show there had been an amendment.
