Trying to solve a family mystery back at the begining of the 1900's. My grandparents were marreid on 25th Dec 1905, Arthur James Cleary and Louisa Jones. I have their marriage certificate. AJ is down as 'of full age' so born around 1880-1884. No sign of him in the 1891 census or the 1901 census. His father is noted as Patrick deceased) - stevedore. There is a family legend (cousins only) that his mother had to get him a new birth certificate before the wedding could take place. He was also listed as a stoker, so we assume he served in the Navy (Royal or Merchant). I can trace Nan back to her Great gran, but am throughtly stuck on Grandad AJ.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance
Chris Skeels

What were the names of the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

Could Arthur James have been born in Ireland as Cleary seems to me an Irish sounding name?

Don't know about Arthur James Cleary being in the Navy as a stoker, but on the original image of the 1911 Census he is....Engine Driver, Stoker. Spratts Patent Dog Biscuit Factory.
Stepney London is given as his birthplace.

If he died 1948 age 66 =1882.
Could this be possible
