OldYorkshireBloke Report 30 Mar 2010 17:27

I have been unable to find either Ann Brierley c1831 Wife of George Brierley (Brearley) 1820 on the 1861 census or their daughter Ann born December Quarter 1860. George and Ann were married in 1857. On the 1861 census George (surname spelling Brearley) is resident with his mother and son William in Hunshelf Yorkshire. Wife Ann and daughter reappear on the 1871 census with George. I have tried various name spellings and date ranges to no avail. I have also tried searching under her maiden name of Howden to see whether they were with relatives but no luck.

I would be grateful for any suggestions

Was going to say perhaps she was at her parents but then noted you have searched under her maiden name. Its possible she was at a relative's house but they failed to list her as thought she would be listed by her husband. BUT if she isnt listed then cant see we can suggest anything . you may have to accept she cant be found then but she was obviously around as she reappeared on the next census

AHH seems she has been found!! perhaps the surname Holden is a mistranscription of Howden

Thats them, she's visiting her mother, I know her name was Rebecca and the ages and birth places fit perfectly.

Another little mystery solved, thanks very much for that, the people on here are great.

Delighted to be of use. Interesting that the family in Dodworth consistantly appear as Holden in the census. As there appears to be no marriage of George Brierley and Ann on FreeBMD, I wonder if the IGI version has been mistranscribed?

I think you are right again on the spelling of the name, I think it is HOLDEN Just done a check on the IGI on her parents' marriage - her father's name Holden. On free BMD , the children come up as Holden and also on the 1871 census, although Ann apears on the BMD register at the time of her marriage as HOWDEN 1857 March Q District Wortley vol 9c pg 181 - same details as George

Thanks again
