Thanks IGP,
have made a start and it's not to bad.
I'm going to do as you do from now on and use the FTM as my main tree in conjunction with Ancestry.I'm glad to hear no export problems between these.I got a little carried away when i first subscribed to Ancestry essentials and neglected to update to FTM,i need a good telling off really!
Any way once i have checked my Ancestry tree i shall be able to create new tree in 2010 without having to do it all from the beginning as i first thought, thanks to your experiment.
So thank you for all the observations and tips etc i have learnt a lesson!

Ok results of experiment I have just done - might just be of help to someone in the future. The same FTM gedcom was originally used to import to GR and Ancestry, so everything started off the same.

Ancestry export has loaded back into FTM without errors.

GR exports has loaded back to FTM with approx 100 date errors.

These are all where I have used the format Bet. Oct–Dec 1999 originally on FTM but this was truncated to "Bet Oct an" when imported to GR, hence is unrecognised when exported back to FTM.

Also, because GR only supports limited Fact Fields much of the additional information I record for census records, addresses and occupations etc is lost on importing to GR.

I suppose this only highlights some of the pitfalls using gedcoms to transfer data about. Partly for this reason I treat FTM as my definitive tree and only transfer outwards to other destinations, never back in.

Blue, if you only have a page of errors, then I would fix those, shouldn't take too long.

Thanks for adding to my thread.
I feel really annoyed with my self!
I started my tree on Genes as a free member and had a basic tree. Then joined as a paid member and started in earnest.I had little experience at the time and i think i just added as much info as i could to people on my tree.
I didn't realise that imputing data acceptable to other software would be a problem, that's how inexperienced i was.
I probably have a page of unacceptable dates and events to rectify.I am about to get FTM 2010 and i think i will remove my 2009 FTM and start from the beginning adding every one I have by hand.
May take me some time but at least data won't be corrupted by my earlier stupidity.
If only I had started using the boards straight away i might have picked up a few tips!

Um, interesting.

I use FTM 2010 - having converted the data recently from 2006 - and have always used dates in the format 12 Jul 1853. I also use the format Abt Sep 1914 when the date is taken from a BMD index. Both these formats are accepted by GR and Ancestry.

However, I see that GR converts the Abt Sep 1914 to Sep 1914 - dropping the Abt - and puts a tick in the unsure box. Ancestry does not make any conversion and retains the field in full, including the Abt.

Up to know I haven't tried moving a file back from GR or Ancestry to FTM, but I might try this when I get a moment and see what happens.

Thanks for getting back,
sorry i'm late in replying was on the phone.

I have family tree maker 2009.
I uploaded a ged file to it from Ancestry
I am getting an error report for unrecognised dates of births marriages etc and i can't find out how to correct them from the little book of tips or from the help index.
however i have been going back and forth from my Genes tree to my Ancestry tree to the FTM tree and i think my problem began on Genes where i first started my tree, i then uploaded my tree to Ancestry. It's all my own fault i had not recorded my information properly in the first place! hence the unreadable data to ftm!

So thanks for offering to help but i think i have to just go through the lot and correct the errors on Genes and now on Ancestry, then down load my revised tree from either and upload to FTM.
Gawd Elp Me!

Thanks any way
