Yes, it is useful to know, and its not just Ireland, although not always followed rigorously

It actually goes much further - see below:-

Child Namesake
1st son paternal grandfather
2nd son maternal grandfather
3rd son father
4th son father's oldest brother
1st daughter maternal grandmother
2nd daughter paternal grandmother
3rd daughter mother
4th daughter mother's oldest sister

This is a bit of a long shot here.
But I seem to be getting patterns with naming children???
I don't know if this is just my family or if it is a parttern in other Irish families.

Here we go
First son appears to be named after the paternal grand father. second son after the maternal grandfather.
Is any one else finding this???
