Re-registration of births

I had been told by my local register office, that children could not bere-registered before 1953 but I discovered today that The Legitimacy Act 1920 allowed parents to re-register children born out of wedlock once they got married,providing that neither parent had been married to someone else when the child was born. This covers 1920-1953.

They were not re-registered in the conventional way ,ie re-issued with a new birth certificate,,,,,,but General Registrar was notified that proof had been shown and Smith and not Brown would be the given name it was filed under if further copies of birth were required and would show mother as fomally and not nee,
