Thankyou IGP I have downloaded a free 30day trial from Family Historian which was recommended so I will see how easy that is to use.

You need to invest in a tree program such as Family Tree Maker. There are other programs too, or you could try the freebie called PAF which you can download from the Family Search Site.

Once installed you simply upload the gedcom you have into the program

Many members prefer to work this way. You do all you updating on your PC, not on websites, then every now and again upload a file to the websites where you want to have your tree.

You can't "bring a gredcom" up to date, as it where. It is a copy of your tree data at a fixed point in time. If you have subsequently made changes to your tree, on GR and then create a new gedcom export, this will reflect those changes.

In order to upload you GR gedcom to Ancestry you first need to save the file onto your PC. Put it on the desktop, or in a folder where you can find it. Make sure you are just saving the gedcom attachment, not the entire email. The file will have the extension .ged

Then log into Ancestry, and select the file you have just saved to import. to your tree.

Following this thread, I've exported my tree via Gedcom but opening the attachment I was disappointed to see that the last update was August 2009!. Not much good really. Any idea how I can have it brought up to date?

As you know you receive it as an email attachment.
you can export it as many times as you like and just leave them as a backup in case Genes crashes.
I have three or four.Actually I have forwarded the email to three of my relatives who are not members of Genes. They open it in PAF(from familysearch).

I exported my gedcom a while ago and as yet done nothing with it,foolish I know.
I couldn't decide the best and easiest place to put it for safe keeping.
Once you have exported it are you able to keep on exporting it to update it.

Sorry if this sounds a silly question, but I'm not very good on the technical side of things.
