Name change Culmer to Gower??

I hadn't actually looked at the census details for a while as I've waited so long for the death certificate to arrive! I'm still confused though as I can't find a marriage between the two names - unless they had just lived together? Also on the 1891 census Charles Gower was listed as an adopted son. I seem to have more questions than ever now!

Relative Ella Edith A Culmer (born Sep 1893, Dartford) appeared on census in 1911 living with her mother Laura but had been unable to find marriage or death for her.

Today received her mother's death cert which showed Ella E A Crowhurst as the informant. Unable to find her marriage but have found a marriage between Elle E A GOWER and Edward A Crowhurst (Dec 1913, Dartford). Looked at scan and I think Ella has been mistranscribed as Elle.

Have also found two births - Leslie (1914) and Evelyn (1916) with the maiden name of Gower.

Have looked for a marriage between Culmer and Gower between 1911 and 1913 but no luck.

I think it must be the same person but can't understand the name change. Does anyone have any suggestions please?
