I understood it to mean the total cost includes the property but each item isnt given a value.

Hi 'was plain ann now annielaurie' and Quinsgran

Thank you both so much for your replies.

So the amount given at the end of a will doesnt include property - it is just the amount in cash?

Thank you for the link given - I will go there now and have a look.

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency.

Gives what its worth today

Eg Jane Austen left £50 in her will in 1817 . Today its worth £2.096

Hi Ann,

but how do I 'translate' this to today's value of the total effects left?

The National Probate Index which you can view at some Archives, at Kew and at some Probate Offices gives the total value of each estate. A copy of the will itself will give the breakdown of who got what, but unless cash, the value of each item isn't given.

Hi,

Does anyone know how I can value the effects left in a will?
Dates vary between 1898-1923.

Many thanks.
