Did they have a connection to the railways:

The ALn 772 (Automotrice Leggera a nafta, Light Diesel motor car) series are a group of Diesel Multiple Units built for the Italian public railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) between the 1930s and the 1950s. As the first project in Italy to abandon the automobile-derived design and adopt a comprehensive "rolling stock" approach, it represents the link between the simple and sturdy Littorine and the modern Diesel units.

Could it be Foreign Subject?

Thank you all v much for taking the time to reply. I think you're right, Barbara. Foreigh Subject sounds very likely. Does that mean they were classed as a foreign subject in England or in their place of birth (Poland)? I'm just curious as I know they were of Jewish heritage & didn't have the same rights as the Polish community in the 1800s. I'm still really stuck as I can't trace them back any further as I can't find out their birth town. :(
