hi, looking for my g grandmother on the 1911 census,i found her in the holytrinity girls school,(certified) address 13 nile street liverpool.her parents both died between the trs 1905-1908,leaving isabella and her sister annie orphans.ive found sister annie living has the adopted daughter of julia butler and her family in 36 exe street toxteth park. my question is does anyone know why a child would be put in an industrial school?was it because she was an orphan with no adult to look after her?why was her sister adopted and not her?does anyone on genes know anything about industrial schools in 1908-1910.x.if i dont reply to posts tonight please forgive me,on the ward tomorrow at 7am,will reply as soon as i get home.thank you.

I think you mean 1908, not 1808. Worth an amendment in case somebody gets it wrong?

Quite out of the blue I pulled up a page with my Grandfather and his first wifes name on what seemed to be an admission register, they had appeared in court regarding their son playing truant, on reading the web page it said that children who were orphans, families not being able to cope, children wandering and taken in for their own safety or little artful dodgers. evidently many of the kids were put in to trade apprenticeships and in some parishes they were rented out to local business people
It went under the short snappy title of

The North London Certified Truant and Industrial School
High street, Walthamstow

Hi Suzanne

I too found a great aunt of mine on the 1911in an industrial school in Hampshire. She had just turned 14 and Iv'e no idea how long her stay was.
the records are closed for a hundred years, so it seems I will have to wait.

My understanding is that children were there for various reasons. eg death or illness of a parent, falling in with the wrong company, truancy and I guess what we would now call anti social behaviour.

I believe that the decision for the placement was usually taken by a magistrate, but maybe that was not always the case.

whatever, the regime was pretty tough and usually a fixed term applied.

In my g aunts case her mother died the following year [1912] so I imagine she was there because of illness in the family.

It does seem a shame for one sister to be adopted and the other not.

If anyone else has another take on Industrial schools I would be interested to hear it too.

Hope you got your ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ in OK!

Sorry Taela I guess I'm just a very slow typer

thank you very much everyone, victoria your post was very interesting,my g grandmother was the isabella mcdonald mentioned in your list.both her parents were dead by the time she was put into the school, but why was one daughter adopted and one put into a school?maybe she was just hard to handle?she became a servent and in 1915 at the age of 17 she gave birth to my grandfather out of wedlock and he was later adopted, cant find out where she worked and thought maybe the school would have records?will get onto the researcher at the liverpool records office.thank you again everyone for your interesting posts.x
