Thanks Sue, Betsey died in 1855. I had all the Great Budworth records which is how I obtained the info.

Where they went after William died, goodness knows.

Hello Shirley, thanks I'll look at that one now.

Found this in the 1871 census

Thomas Knight (29) Beerhouse Keeper born : St Bredworth, Cheshire in the transcript, but looking at the original it could well be Gt Budworth, Cheshire.

He has a wife Ann (34) from Bala, Merionetshire, Wales
and children Joseph M.B. Knight (3), Mary(1) & Annie(4mths) all born in Manchester, Lancashire.

This could be Thomas Knight born c1842, in which case did the family return to Wales after their fathers death? Just a thought as his wife is from Wales.

The family are also in the 1881 census, transcript has Bidworth but original looks more like Budworth. Worth checking for first names only etc, some of the transcripts are way off, but then the writing is often hard to read.

Hi Helen,

Thanks for doing that. That's another branch of the Knights, Joseph Menel Bateman Knight got the Bateman name too! Gwen Jones, sister of wife Anne, was the daughter of Ifan Jones (Anne's father from Bala). She was drafted in as a servant (poor girl) after her sister married.

It's just a coincidence that both gt gt grandfathers married girls from Wales.

I thought that the widow Knight might have gone over to the other Knight branch or teurned to South Wales for a while but I just cannot locate them.

I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

Am just having a look in Newspapers for the suicide.

John B Knight, 1833, in the 1891 census

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 2530; Folio 32; Page 17; GSU roll: 6097640.

Another possibility is that the mother re-married and the younger child/ren are under the Spouse's name.

Or.......

Known problems with 1861 piece numbers:

One thing is for certain.....they are not in Great Budworth 1861 census as I have trawled through it.

Had you considered this entry for 1871?

Ivy

Ivy Report 24 Apr 2010 13:15

The above might fit with this 1861 entry:

Name: Ann Pilkington
Age: 53
Estimated birth year: abt 1808
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: James
Gender: Female
Where born: Abergeley, Wales

Civil parish: Hulme
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Chorlton
Sub-registration district: Hulme
ED, institution, or vessel: 14

Household schedule number: 56
Household Members:
Name Age
James Pilkington 61
Ann Pilkington 53
Mary Pilkington 33
John Pilkington 21

It looks from the image in 1851 as if the enumerator may have crossed through Abergele, which is why Ancestry have simply indexed her birthplace for 1851 as South Wales.

Thank you to everyone that helped, pretty sure now that the widow Knight did remarry James Pilkington. Also the fact that she appears to have been born in Abergele is a great help in trying to trace her family.

You are all so kind with your time and effort.

Thanks again
