Mhairi Queen of Scots Report 25 Apr 2010 23:28

Hi Carole

The deaths listed on the Scotlandspeople website, before 1855, are mainly burial details and are basically a list of names, the date they died/buried and occasionally what they died of. Sometimes its mentioned wife of *, child of * but for the former, its usually women.

For the marriage sometimes, and I say sometimes, the brides father is mentioned, but not usually since they are really a list of bannes and not the actualy marriage. Which is why you often find two of them.

Overall, Scottish records pre 1855 arent that great.

Hi Frank

I got the marriage details from the IGI but wanted to know the fathers names hence the ordering of the certificate and the death I have the date and copy of newspaper cutting someone sent me but wanted to know a bit more about the informant if it was his wife and to be certain it is the correct one, I will have a look at scotlandpeople tmwr as have only just had my password emailed.

Hello again Carole,

I'm afraid that the Old Parish Registers (pre 1855) don't give very much detail at all.

Births......Place & date of birth, father & mother's name, no maiden name,

Marriages........Date & place of marriage, no parents details.

Deaths........Often show very little but at best will have date, area of death & age & cause of death & sometimes address.

You may have some more luck with the free IGI site for those early dates which can sometimes give parental details .......

hi carole

Scotlands registrations only came in in 1855 but you can view the parish registers on Scotlands People.

I have managed to get back to 1726 using this site.

On marriage certificates which can be viewed online they give the parents of the people getting married and also their mothers maiden names which helps to get back further.

They also have wills on the Scotlands people site. Well worth a look

thanks Frank
I have the month and years but not the folio and page numbers that you can quote when ordering english ones, dates are 1846 for the death and 1840 for the marriage, so you can view the certificates on line and print them out.

Hi Carole,

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You can search the BMD indexes up to 2009 and view
the certificates online subject to the following cut offs.

Births - 1909
Marriages - 1934
Deaths - 1949

Payment is required to view search results and certificates.

£6.00 for 30 credits

1 credit to view page of search results up to about 24 per page.
5 credits to view certificate online which is downloadable, saveable and always available to view again whenever you login.

Join up, it costs nothing to search and you can narrow down the matches by changing the areas and dates.

If the required certificates are outwith the above date cut offs, you may order them from the same website, details when you find the records on the indexes.

Good luck.
