Hello
I am stuck with a couple of people who were born in the first few years of 1800 and who married just before the 1837 marriage records began.

I understand that I need to check parish records, but what can I hope to find out from an early 1800 birth record and marriage record? Would parent names appear on either of these?

Thank you

edit - Manchester Cathedral if that makes a difference.

dont know if you have already looked on the IGI site, but worth a try.

I have thanks. So basically the IGI site has all the same details - if the child does not have parents listed on IGI then they won't be listed in the parish record?

Your early 1800 birth would appear in Baptisms records rather than birth. Parish records are Baptisms, Marriages, Burials.

In the County Baptism Records, the baptims might appear as an index, say, name and a year (possibly the date) would appear and the Parish it the event took place.
In the Parish Records (of Manchester Cathedral) you are likely to find a litte more information, it really depends on how well they kept their records. You would probably find the date, names of both parents, mother's maiden name and father's occupation, sometimes you strike lucky and get more.
Similar situation with Marriage records.

It is worth remembering that the IGI does not cover all counties/parishes-some Bishops would not allow the LDS to film their registers

Julian...I have a GGGrandfather in Derbyshire who married 1832 in Manchester Cathedral.....it was important to me because i coudn't see why he would be married in Manchester.........I contacted the manchester Cathedral Archives..and found it possible to purchase a copy of the marriage record......on which it gave the husband's occupation.and not a lot else except the details of the marriage.......but it was the Huisband's occupation that did it for me.........

So it IS possible to get pre-1837 documentation from Manchester Cathedral....but it is NOT a marriage certificate as such.....

Good luck

Derek.
