Thanks Sat Nav...that's the one. His death was registered as Richard Lokfthouse Shepherd so he has to be that one.

Thanks Sylvia in Canada....that looks promising...the places are right...I'll see if I can track back on Betty Brown and maybe her husband...

Yes, I thought so too , but....
I think he was maybe adopted.... or his mother married and he took the husbands name.....I've followed a few leads but no result.

I did seriously consider that pair, but Alice really was a widow, having been married to James in 1851, and was living with her son who had married by then in 1871...sadly not the one.

I have hin in Blackley in 1871 too, but cannot find him on any census before that.

I believe he was Richard Loftus Shepherd baptised Pilling 11 March 1836, illegitimate son of Alice Shepherd, a servant.

Any sighting of him before 1871 much appreciated.
