Do you know, then, if it was Washington, DC or Washington State? They are on opposite sides of the continent.

Thank you ladies

Will check out websites tomorrow. Hopefully I can find out how he died. He died young compared to his 12 siblings.

Check: http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=allCollections&r=0
"Browse the record collection" for DC deaths.

NB In 1877, Washington Territory also existed - this later (1889/90) became the states of Washington and Idaho.

I thought it would be but it's always best to check just in case :)

I googled and found this:

http://www.deathindexes.com/washington/index.html

I don't know if it will be of any help though.

Hope someone will be along soon that can help :) Good luck!

Hello Barbara,

Did he definitely leave for the states as I think there's a couple of places in England called Washington?

I am looking for source record to confirm the death of Father Henry Carruthers in Washington in 1877. He was the brother of my gggrandfather. He was born in Troqueer kirkcdbright Scotland on 7 Oct 1843. He was a priest in Bathgate on 1871 Scottish census

Someone has him baptising one of his relatives in Bathgate in 1873 so he must have left after this date for the states but I have been unable to find his passage.

I know he died in 1877 because it is mentioned on his parents gravestone but only that he died in washington no actual date.

So my question is were do I look for deaths in Washington on line?
