Thanks for that Chris. I keep hitting a stumbling block because there are several submitted entries for one piece of information that I'm looking for and everyone (well, two people) have told me the information must be correct as it looks well-researched. How can they tell? My instinct is not to trust it but I can't find it anywhere else. Grrrr.

To be sure you would need to look at only those records that are 'Extracted' so the information has been taken from Parish Registers. They will be recorded as something like...

'Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date.'

However it doesn't guarantee that the person recording the info got it right!....I have an instance of a extracted marriage that gave a surname of Evans but when I viewed the actual register entry Evans was actually something similar but different!

As for Ancestral Files and Pedigree Resource Files...The info they hold are reliant on the research skills of person who submitted them.....So treat with caution and use them as a guide to further research.

Thanks Somerset Girl. I thought that was it but I wasn't sure. I have found information on the other files but they were all submitted. Any ideas how I can verify that information if they are not on the extracted files?

Can someone please clarify which information I can trust on FamilySearch. I am looking for details of various relatives from 1663 - 1780 and am getting confused with the different types of entries.

There is Ancestral File which says the information is not verified but has been taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records.

Then there is International Geneological Index (IGI) which says they are extracted records

Then there is Pedigree Resource File which appears to be submitted by individuals.

The census records don’t apply for the dates I am looking for.

I would appreciate it if someone could set me right as to which information of the above I can trust, if any.

Many thanks
