How do you read a Gedcom

Re Gedcom files. Latter Day Saints' site has a very plain free download. Also My Heritage is a free download with provision for uploading photos, adding notes, searches etc.

Yes, it is hard work as one is essentially trying to represent a tree in a linear file. Whilst looking at a single family (i.e., parents plus kids) is not so bad, doing much more really needs recreating at least a branch of the tree and whilst you can do this with pen & paper, it's really much easier to, say, download the free PAF Bernie mentioned, or pick up a cheap program out of a remainder bin.

Hi Jen,
If you can make any sense at all of it when viewing in wordpad or whatever, then I am very impressed. You need to open it in some genealogy program - FTM, Legacy, PAF (free from FamilySearch) - then all will be revealed.

I have had a Gedcom file emailed to me ,
It 's hard work reading down it ,it must be an easyer way than how im looking at it,
