A question for the GR family.

When a widow remarried [say 1900 -1920,UK] was there a convention about the use of her original maiden name on the marriage certificate ?

you usually find she is married in her widowed name, followed by citation of her maiden name

Thanks Sylvia.

Any idea how the transcribers handle this ?

Transcribers only transcribe what is on the original GRO record sheet.

Sometimes there will be an alternate name given, in which case two entries are made.

For example the GRO original page might say,

BLOGGS Joe.........Smith OR Carter........Bideford 5b 724

In which case this would be transcribed as two entries

BLOGGS Joe......Smith....Bideford 5b 724
BLOGGS Joe......Carter....Bideford 5b 724

When you search for Joe Bloggs then you will see two entries for Joe Bloggs and one entry for each of the surnames for the spouse.

Marriages Mar 1942 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bloggs Joe Carter Bideford 5b 724
Bloggs Joe Smith Bideford 5b 724
Smith Mary Bloggs Bideford 5b 724
Carter Mary Bloggs Bideford 5b 724

Hope this helps.

I only have two marriage certs. for widows.
They married using their previous married name.
No mention of previous surnames.
However they give their fathers names.

Of the certificates I have seen for second marriages, there is only the first married name mentioned.

However on a birth certificate of a child born after the second marriage the mother's first married name as well as her maiden name are mentioned.

I think that if you are looking for a second marriage certificate you should just be looking for the first married name in the index - although there are always exceptions where a woman reverts to her maiden name.

it doesnt always follow that a child from a second marriage will show mums first married name. depends how the info was asked for,
my fathers mums second husband registered the births of their first two children and no mention was made of grans first husband surname who was my dads father.
Similarly my mum was the eldest child of her parents second marriage .ie both were widowed . No refs is made on my mums birth, and any of her full siblings certs, of nans first married name, these are all in the early 1900,s
