I have him on the 1901 living with Betsy and children as man and wife again. I haven't got his death cert yet. His daughter Nellie was my father in laws mother i have her marriage cert ,(1908 ) father is named as John Thomas Palmer deseased, the witness was a Minnie Ellis this is her sister who married a Albert Edwin Rollins Ellis.
The John Thomas bit is very confusing but i am almost sure this is the right family and i do have Nellies birth cert on order just to be sure.

Can I ask you Sue, have you got Thomas in 1901? and if so, who was he living with? I assume you have worked backwards from what you know and have got his death cert? There are so many Thomas Palmers' born in Leicestershire around that period that I wondered how you knew it was him living with Betsy?

Mary i cannot believe i have never noticed that Tom and Betsy are both widows on the 1891 before.
Betsys husband died in 1877 at the Boro Asylam and her death is recorded in 1922 as Betsy Underwood so i had assumed that Thomas must have a living wife somewhere and that was the reason they never married.
The Thomas Palmer convicted in 1847 may not be the right one but it all seems to point that way.
Thank you so much for noticing that

Didn't Betsy and Thomas marry?
1891 betsy Underwood widow living on own means with her 7 children in Underwood name
Tom Palmer 1836 shoemaker and a widow.

11 years seems a bit barbaric to be transported and then make your way back.

G. Grandfather in law Thomas Palmer 1836/7 - 1905 Leicester.

I have been trying to find any info on him before 1881 for months
He lived with a Betsy Underwood ( Nee Moore ) She married a Richard Underwood in 1868 and lived in Sanvy Gate Leicester, by 1881 she is living with Thomas and they have 2 children, this is the earliest record i can find for him.
Next door to where Betsy lived with her husband is a John and Mary Ann Palmer they had a son Thomas in 1836 and can be found on the 1841 census but Thomas is missing from the 1851 he seemed to have disappeared between 1841 until he turns up again in 1881.
But i have just found a record on Ancestry of Leicester Boro Sessions !st March 1847 of a Thomas Palmer aged 11 sentenced to 7 years transportation for Larceny, i am so excited !!!!

What i wanted to ask was does anyone know how i can find more information on this, would it have been Australia and are there any records available about when they were released.
Hope this makes sense.
Sue
