If he was in the Rifle Brigade you need to know which unit he was in really to find out more. You may be able to find this out from the Medal Roll which is at the National Archives, not online. Where he came from will probably not be relevant. Also, as has been suggested, his records, if they have survived will be on the Ancestry website. They won't appear in the National Archives Catalogue.

The medals you buy will not be replacements of the one your grandfather won .

........ they will be replicas.

Just for advice WW! service records are on Ancestry. not sure if you would have found any details on the N. Archives site, unless you actually went to kew.

If you post his details folks will have a look for you, also note that only 30% of these records have survived.

Thanks for your reply. I have tried googling Rifle Brigade but my problem is find something on the one which originated in Cork.
Cheers

Searching (Kew) National Archives website for my grandfather's service record, WW1, I wasn't too surprised when I couldn't find any service records for him but was delighted to find two references to medals he had won.

On one medal card I found a handwritten message, dated 1919, one of the medals had been reported missing. My mother had believed that they both been stolen in 1919.

I wondered if anyone knows if it is possible to get medal replacements, or if there is registry of old medals to help me trace them?

Also, as it is unlikely I will find his service records, I thought I would try and find something about his Regiment. I would appreciate any ideas on how to find out about southern Irish soldiers who joined the British army -in particular the Rifle Brigade.

Thanks
