I am going to post it to get it retouched and brightened up, I think the ladies need to be seen!! I received a message to link to a postcard which clearly shows the sign outside of The Chestnuts. Yes, it was definitely the home everyone suggested.
I am waiting for further information from a friend regarding my relatives there and why.

Just had a look at the post a picture, and I don't feel uncomfortable at all putting it up there...particularly when there's pictures of people's back yards, birds in trees, unnamed and unknown relatives etc LOL.

Thnx, yeah I thought about posting it there, but it wasn't a success story, I thought maybe that's for reunion pics and the like...but will have a look.

Photos can be added to this site - see Success videos and photos on left-hand side of screen. Never tried myself but lots of people do add.

I am wondering if it would be possible to find records of residents at "The Chestnuts" from 1909? I am almost certain Lizzie is in that picture somewhere, and starting to think that the little girl in it might even be her daughter Lilian.

Well I think you may have helped me solve this puzzle. For my nan to have kept this picture means it must have had a family connection. The fact that everyone in the immediate family on both sides of her tree were born and raised in the same area, disappointed me when you said Sussex, but I remembered something a fellow researcher on our tree gave me...the 1911 census for Elizabeth Cason (My great Grandmother's sister)...she was located in SUSSEX, in a CONVALESCENT HOME!!
I am so excited to have a link to an old photo and a family member...all through a simple question about posting pictures!!

I would agree with MB, it could not be 1809 as there was no photography at that time.

If you Google you will find there was a convalescent home called "The Chestnuts" in Lancing, Sussex. There are old postcards on ebay, taken around 1910. Regent House was built c.1939 on site of 'The Chestnuts' rest home. Location is Horseshoe Corner, South Street

Photography didn't start unil late 1820s so I'd suspect that the '09 refers to 1909.
Lancing - is a place in West Sussex, there may be more than one place with that name but that's the one that springs to mind.
You could upload the photo into photobucket of flicker and then suggest people PM you for the link if they'd like to help identify the photo.
It could be a Beano - which was a yearly outing organised by the local pub or church to the seaside. My ancestors from London would go on these outings.

Perhaps I will add some of the information from the picture on here in the hope somebody will recognise something about it.

The picture was taken in '09, but I can't be sure which century. I am sure an expert could pinpoint the dress of the day, and I am leaning towards 1809.
It is titled "The Chestnuts". Lancing July 7th 09, which I presume is an area with chestnut trees. Now I know my mother used to collect conkers from Enfield that fell from the horse chestnuts, and as my nan had the picture, would hazard a guess it was taken in the Enfield/Hackney/Bethnal Green area.
Is Lancing a place in that area?

There are 40 women in the picture. One of them is a young girl. The older women are wearing lace collars.

Don't think you can on here. You can add a photo to your tree which can be seen by anyone who has access, but not what you are suggesting.

I have found in my grandmother's old photos, an intersting group shot.
I am totally unfamiliar with the area or the event, ands thought it would be nice to post it for members to look at and perhaps shed light on it. Is it possible to post a picture thread instead of a written thread?
