I think we all have to find a way that just works for us really. You seem to be doing OK now with logging the change of name.

One of my main surnames of interest has 4 main spellings and I have found cousins or even siblings registered in different ways, so I just stick to one spelling throughout, making notes of how they were actually registered or logged in parish records etc.
This way, when I ask the computer to build trees, I can gather all the families into their mini groups, which wouldn't be so easy with different surname spellings.

Yes I decided I aught to change mine so I have put the names as registered at birth, or if before registration, as baptised and put a note on each one of how the name changed around 1881 to Summerfield.

It made sense really to do it this way as it shows how the name changed.

I just needed someone to tell me what was obvious think I must have been having a senior moment :-D

Just keep making notes as you find a difference in surname. Summerfield known as Somerfield when appropriate

Oh ok Rose, what I have been doing is putting them in as Summerfield, as that is the name used since abt 1881 and putting notes on to give the registration names.

A lot of the later ones that were registered Somerfield even used Summerfield when they married and in one of the branches some were registered Somerfield at birth but siblings were registered Summerfield.

I always list the surname as it was on the birth certificate.

As some of you will know I asked for help on Summerfield family

Can someone please advise me on how I should enter these in my tree. My tree at the moment is with the surname Summerfield but the ones I have just found are with the surname Somerfield, so what name do I put them under in my tree.

If I put them in as Somerfield then their children would be a different surname to them.
