I'm looking for a Nellie Louise Cole b.abt.1880 in Yorkshire but having no luck and am wondering whether Nellie is short for anything other than Ellen (I've tried that!) Any ideas gratefully received.
Thanks
Hazel

Hazel, my Gran was a Nellie. Her name was Eleanor Anne. But I knew another Nellie and her name was Mary Ellen.
Not much help I know, but there are so many variations.

I had a great aunt Nell - her real name was Alice!

My great Grandfather (born 1880) was Stanley - on my gran's birth cert, his marriage cert - even on his gravestone!
I had terrible trouble finding his birth. On the 1901 census he was Stanley. I couldn't find him on the 1881 or 1891 cenus under Stanley. In the end, I looked for his sister (born 1887), found her on the 1891 census with 4 brothers - none of whom was called Stanley - but there was one born at the right time & place called Giffard, 2 older brothers called Herbert and Ernest, and a younger brother called Ivan.
Looked for Giffard on the 1881 census - he was there - but his elder brothers were Ernest and Sylvanus (born at exactly the same time as Herbert)
Went back to 1891 census - younger brother no longer called Ivan - he was Frederick!
The brothers had, as soon as capable changed their unusual names to more common ones! I had to double check everything - but I knew they lived within a small area of Cornwall, and their father was a Blacksmith

This may be a way to search for your Nellie.

Thank you all very much for your input. I am actually researching for a friend in Perth, Western Australia - Nellie Louise Cole was his Paternal Grandmother. All that he 'knew' about her was that she was born c.1880 in Yorkshire and that she married his Grandfather in Perth. Well, today I have been busy trying to find their Marriage and children's Births on the W.Australia BMD and hey presto! I also found her Death which, miracle of miracles, gave her Father and Mother's names!!!!!!! Frederick and Elizabeth! This means my 1901 Census Nellie is incorrect but the one I found in 1881 is definitely her, with parents Frederick and Elizabeth, and gives Birth Place as Leicester, so the Birth Entry for Nellie Louise Cole in 1878 in Leicester has to be hers! I am thrilled - just needs proving with Certificates now!
Riddle solved - her name was Nellie!!!!

Anyway, thank you all for your help which spurred me on to further research!
