The above lady was my Grandmother and I have just discovered in the 1891 Census that she was adopted by John Kindley. How do I trace back from there to find her biological parents?

Do you know who she married? Her marriage certificate asks for fathers details - She may have put her adopted fathers name though.
Im sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong, But I don't think formal adoptions took place then. I'd look around the family to see if there are any Parker's.

I think this is her marriage -
Name: Mary Ellen Kindley
Year of Registration: 1907
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Newcastle Upon Tyne
County: Northumberland, Tyne and Wear
Volume: 10b

To
John Thomas Sangster.

As she has married using the surname Kindley - I would think that she put John Kindley as her father at marriage - But It may show her 'real' fathers name.

This may be her birth entry, It will list mothers name a least - Maybe father depending on whether the mother was married.

Legal adoption only began in 1926/27. I have tried to trace someone from that time and it's quite difficult. I guess it must have been informal in the 1890's so.........? It may be worth googling Adoption pre 1926 for more information. Cx.
