Hot matches are only matched on the name and birth year not place of birth.

I look forward to Hotmatches but I did untick ,
Hot Matches email about family trees which appear to contain my relation
During the three months that it remained unticked I did not receive any Hotmatches.Others will say that this cannot happen but it did for me!
There is another option which may suit you;
Family Trumps email featuring a relation in my tree with a detailed match in other members' trees.
I have fourteen Smiths in my tree but I have never had a Hotmatch
Why? Sm*th or something similar.

Doing a search for a friend will not add a name to your Surname Summary. As mentioned it is a list of all the surnames in your tree, and the only way you can change it is by adding or deleting names from your tree.

The second column, 'Matches in my Family Tree' tells you the number of occurrences of that name in your tree. It's possible there is a glitch but I have not heard anyone mentioning before.

Names should only be in the surname summary if they are in your tree, so if there are extras I would contact GR about that glitch.
Personally I would leave all your family names in the tree and disregard the Hot Matches.
I find it better to check as Mick does.
With names like William Davies, George Jones etc. I too would be inundated.

Why would you want to delete names from Surname Summary. It's probably the most powerful and useful tool on GR for making contacts with other members who have the same family members in their tree.

It is not possible as far as I am aware to edit Surname Summary. It works dynamically and only reflects the surnames of everyone in your existing tree at that moment of time. I go to Surname Summary once a day and set the days activity counter to 1 (one). That way I can see if anyone has added an ancestor that I might be interested in during the previous 24 hours. If I find a match and Surname Summary indicates that the person who added the ancestor has not been in contact with me before, then I can send them a message directly from Surname Summary to make initial contact.

About 95% of the contacts I make on GR are made through this facility.

I am not slow to criticize things that do not work but for this utility on GR I only have praise.
