Hi everyone
just typed a screed, clicked submit, waited ages, it went to white page ...... and I lost the whole lot 'cos I hadn't saved it!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Fall officially began here at 8:09 pm last night (Wednesday) .... and it has rained almost all day!
Sue ................. one of the problems of living in a big city is high rises, especially when it is a city that consistently rates high in world wide reviews of "most livable city" and such like.
The problem is that this part of it where I live is really more like a village. All the buildings, bar one, are 4 storeys or less. The one building is 12 storeys.
I was in hospital in early 1969 for an eye operation. I shared a ward with 3 other women, who were between the ages of 75 to 95. Those were the days when they kept you in hospital for upto 5 days for such surgery, so we had plenty of time to talk. The 75 year old was a definite Merry Widow type ............... dyed red hair, probably mascara'd up when not recovering from cataract surgery, and making risque comments all the time. The 85 year old was almost a nonetity compared with the other 2 ..... like me, she listened a lot!
The 95 year old was fascinating. I've often wished since that I had kept up contact with her, and written down her stories. She was bright as a button, never married, Irish, and proud of it. I can still see her in my mind's eye putting her hands on her hips, sticking her elbows out, and tossing her head, as she said it!
She had emigrated to Canada in 1910, to keep house for her brother in a small cottage on the north bank of the Fraser River ........... less than a mile from where I now live (though not back then). The community was its own entity, called Eburne, and was separated from Vancouver by miles of forest. There was a Post office on the south bank of the river, and at least one store on the northern bank. The cottage they lived in was way out in the country even from Eburne.
She used to walk 10 to 12 miles along the narrow track through the forest to Vancouver to get necessary supplies that they could not grow, catch or make.
I love to hear these stories of the old days .......... which are not that long ago here.
Take care everyone

Hi Sylvia
Nice to hear from you,It is a bit quiet today but I think a few are away on holidays. I hope our little town stays the way it is I hate change of any kind but I know it will come one day.
Yes I too like the old stories,The Irish are great at stories I have a few Irish friends that tell me things that went on in the years of the fighting over there between them and the British troops.
I feel very bad for some of the things that went on and family members that were lost.
Sister In Law was in Hospitol with other ladies that lost there breasts to Cancer, one of them has not got long to live ,that has made her worry a bit lately. I have got her onto Skype as well trying to fill her mind with other things ,keep her busy so to speak.
We are warming up today but rain tonight even though it is warm. Off to look at the boards. Suex

Sounds like you're having fun with the Skype then Sue!! Good for you.....it must be lovely to chat with your rellies and see them too. My friend does that regularly with her daughter in NZ . She is able to watch her baby granddaughter as she grows.....must be great.
Sounds like you are both having building problems in your area - you need to get Sylvia over there Sue....she'd be great at fighting for the cause - you should have heard her at the last meeting she went to!
Quite a free day today so am looking forward to it.
Keep well all. Love. Cx.

I am really enjoying Skype,I get to see and talk to alot of people I have not seen for years, especially the ones I have missed when I have gone back for a holidays.
I had a funny one tonight ,a major General in Iraq wanted to be in contact but the other half would not allow !!Bugger!!,I wonder if he had a lot of money.
He was an American and my dear old mum told me to be very aware of American men . Suex

My goodness Sue, we're going to have to keep our eye on you, aren't we??? lol Didn't realise other people could contact you, just thought you chose your own family/friends. One lives and learns!!
Beautiful day here today, just right for drying the washing.
Have been out to lunch and had a good chat so now it's time for a relax and browse.

Sylvia,
Open a word document or e-mail or similar and write your stories on that, then copy & paste it into this wee GR box. That way, if it goes belly up you still have the original.
For the next message just open the same document, delete the contents and use it again.
Simples ;)
Susan,
Just be very wary of anything "strange" on the internet and that includes Nigerian bankers looking for your bank details as well as American Major Generals in Iraq who have nothing better to do than look for contacts...........
And Cynthia, don't you be getting ideas about talking to strange men.
Be careful out there!
P.S I don't count ;)

Hi Everyone
Frank , thankyou for that advice,I will stay away from Major Gen's espec, thats if he was who he said he was.
It really is good though as it costs nothing,so my phone bill should go down. I have also up'ed my internet to the next level, more gigs and a faster speed, that should fix any problems.
We went up to Perth today just for a day trip of shopping ,no good taking men,the OH winged all day . He could have stayed home. and watched the football but no he wanted to come.
27c today warming up fast. Check in tonight. Suex

Our problem with Skype is that my OH will call our daughters then go on Skype to show them something or other while still talking on the phone and wandering about the house. That means I can't get near the computer until she's finished on the phone so it doesn't get any cheaper.....
Now then Susan,
Men are hunter gatherers, we go out for something, catch it, kill it and return to the cave.
Women would go out to look for the "kill" before deciding.....
It was too big for the oven. It didn't have enough legs. It was the wrong colour. It looked too cute. It 's so last year's fashion. Her mother was coming to tea and she was a vegan, well at least from another planet .
How did we ever survive ?
UGGHH
P.S. 27c today warming up fast ??!!
That's our high summer if we're lucky.

Well - everyone seems to be ok - Frank what planet do you live on these days with tht sort of heat?
Had a lovely week away - no internet access - too many trees aparently - so using up the spare dongle time at the in-laws while they are talking to the OH.
Had a very quiet birthday yesterday - yet another year older but don't feel that old at all - I know I look it - thanks Frank & Cynthia.
What have you all done with Evelyn?
Kitchen sounds lovely Sylvia - did we get a colour scheme?
Susan - don't let your s-i-l get down hearted - my friend had 4 very good years - until she went for a reconstruction - which in my opinion was her downfall - I am sure she would still be with us if she hadn't had all that invasive surgery. Please don't let her opt for that.
Tell her to live life a day at a time & enjoy herself and do everything she can.
There now I am getting depressed again - had a few bad nights - funny dreams keep creeping up on me - very strange - things I don't want to think about any more.
Lovely day today - sitting here looking out over the Thames towards the Kent coast - wonderful sunshine - loads of boats out on the water.
When are we having our joint birthday party Sue - Next weekend? Your place or mine?
I feel like a cheer up session is required - Reece please pop in if you can - we all miss you.
Well better join in the family chat again - will try & join you all again tomorrow.
Take care all

Hi Anne,
Always nice to have you back with us although I am rather saddened at the fact that even after your break, you are feeling a touch down . I could say that it's only another year but I'm sure that's not what's bothering you.
I suppose it's easy to say but I feel that to focus on the future while trying to live with whatever is bothering you from the past is the key.
I can go back to my rape and remember every second however unpleasant but manage to keep it to the back of my mind. I must admit that I don't have bad dreams about it. I also had to cope with my parents divorce but perhaps it helped that I was the eldest of six and used to just pushing on regardless of whatever else was going on around me. That doesn't make me hard or anything like that, merely accepting what life throws up and hoping for better things to come.
"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. "
Take care.

Wise words Frank......wise as well as funny, what a great combination! As for the way you wear a kilt....well, I am speechless.
I think Kathleen has got over it so to speak. It was just so embarrassing seeing my name on a thread heading so am glad its disappeared.
Busy day, went shopping this afternoon with daughter. It went better than I expected as she gets very uptight about making decisions on what to get.
Glad you had a good break Anne but hope you feel more cheerful soon. I can dream for England but I don't take any notice of them to be honest.....mostly I am busy and hithering and thithering around. It's more restful to wake up sometimes!! lol
Right, off to bed I go......take care all. Cx

Sylvia & Susan,
What do you mean you missed it?
How could you, I mean it was headline news with our Cynthia holding her head in shame as as her moniker was blazed across the boards.
There follows a report from our bored reporter ;)
Guilty of spreading allegedly unwarranted messages on the threads, the hereto unknown Ms Taylor was slated for her brazen attempts to increase her contacts.
"My contact list is over 8,000"
Locals were quite horrified at the thought of strange messages appearing in their Personal Mail and rallied to the side of the plaintiff with very strong views on the matter.
"I think she sounds quite rude!"
" Best not message me"
"...you could always block her....end of annoying messages "
There were even some ageist comments being thrown into the mix.
"we all start losing our memory....maybe Cynthia is of that age.."
"Do write Kathleens details in large letters....and keep taking the memory pills"
Will we see the demise of GR's infamous poster or will common sense prevail and allow an old woman to while away her final years on a (t)rusty keyboard.
I'll leave you with a final comment from one fan who would appear to be in agreement with our manic messenger.......
"contact Cynthia when we have "strange"people pop up "
Further details may be found at the offending thread ;)).

######################################## HOT NEWS FLASH ########################################
We have breaking news that Ms Taylor has aquiesced to demands that her ageing style of contact collection be halted. This was however seen a a smokescreen by some who claim to have been receiving further invitations to share contacts.
"if you would like to pm me please. My contact list is over 8,000 "
"If you would like a copy of the message I send out, I will be happy to pm it to you."
A rather turgid press conference was halted after claims that a malfunctioning hearing aid merely had run out of batteries. Supporters groups urged Ms Taylor to tie some string around her finger.
"so that you do not forget again"
A hearing aid spokesman suggested the problem lay with the on/off switch. Until Ms Taylor regains the use of all her faculties, this is your genial or should that be genealogical reporter diving for cover.
Ouch................

round the ear 'ole for you Frank m'lad!
There's me hoping it will die a death and there's you encouraging everyone else to read it.........I've a good mind to report you to the press commission....or whatever it's called!
My head was not hanging in shame........that was sheer embarrassment....could you not tell by the glow emanating from my rosy cheeks???
Ah well, water off the proverbial ducks back......quack quack.
A beautiful day here even if a little chilly. Just been to a local sweet/ce cream shop which sells coffee. It gets my daughter and I out of the way whilst OH has his Sunday afternoon snooze.
Right.....off to do today's batch of messaging and keeping an eagle eye out for any Kathleen's!! lol

Hey, it's your roving reporter again with all the latest news on Ms Taylor's latest faux pas.
I was faced with the unenviable task of proving to the press commision that my story was in the public interest while at the same time having to fend off the furious advances of a red faced woman in full flow.
Perhaps some herbal HRT or even a nice cup of Earl Grey would be of benefit ;).
We at the genial genelogical reporting services will not be intimidated by anyone attempting to interest the locals in illegal practices.
Smack.............'ere, isn't that illegal whatever way you take it ;)
