Wow - a big thank you to all that have contributed ( and I have learned more about the info available) - it makes up for my many hours spent this afternoon - so much progress made - I will now update my tree and move on to verifying other details tomorrow.

Cookson is likely to be either his mother's maiden name, or perhaps a grandmother's maiden name. It was not unknown in the Victorian period for women to keep their names going by using them as middle names for their sons. I have numerous cases of it in my own tree.

Have also edited to say I think that this is particularly likely given that he is the first son born in the family after two girls.

William Standing and Emma Thirkill are not witnesses. They are just another couple who are on the same page of the register.

William Standing was the other person on the page.....!

Robert, there are two separate marriages recorded on the same page at the GRO, so both have the same reference. The other one between William Standing and Emma has nothing to do with the marriage you are interested in.

Thanks for getting back SomersetGirl,

In your reply you had a reference to:

STANDING William Huddersfield 9a 499
Thirkill Emma Jane Huddersfield 9a 499

Which I do not understand

Thanksto all of you - so quick - yes a typo 1884 sorry - I was too eager to post.

Cookson - I have not come across such a name before.

ps.... as a newbie ....what is the STANDING reference - I am presuming witnesses at marriage.

If you mean 1884 and it's a Huddersfield marriage, then the Ancestry image is a typed one and is Law Cookson Ramsden.

My GG Grandfather was Law Ramsden - I have looked at his marriage to Rachel Jepson Q4 1864 on GR, but I find it difficult to read his middle name - the middle name is not shown on the 1901 census.

I have googled unusual names but can not find anything similar to this Coo (possibly k) ??

If anyone can help I would be very pleased.
