They do seem to be a bunch of burglers. lol.
My James spent a year in gaol for larceny too (1844) under the name Harroll (Harrold) but I think this was because he couldn't provide for his family after his wife died. He had 3 previous for deserting his family then the biggy. The children then went into a workhouse
It is so sad, but interesting all the same to have a few skeletons in the closet.
The death you gave ,is, I think the chap who I was asking about in my query. I have a feeling he may be my James's dad.

Thanks for your help.

Than you Jonesey.
I spent 5 hours at the Bury St Edmunds RO yesterday. I found 4 gaol register records and the man we also have is called James. Two of the records show HARROLD and the other 2 show HURRELL. The family name we use now is HAROLD.
The gaol records show his father to be called James and died in ixworth. The first gaol sentence was early 1844 so dad had died by then. I cannot find either a baptism for our James or death/burial for his dad.
Our james 1811 shows as born Pakenham / Ixworth.
I was hoping to get further back. I have his dads name but nothing else.

I suppose Harrold could easily sound like Hurrell with a local accent thrown in.

Thanks for your help. I will keep the info. You never know it might fit in at a later date.

I have found a possible relative but don't have access.
Details are:---
JAMES HURRELL - 1786 - THINGOE

There is also another , same name born 1816

Details from that census would be appreciated.
Thanks
