Hi Derek,

Thank you for trying to help me.

Yes I got the burials film out which is why I am really confused. Because of what I'd read on familysearch, I expected to find the two burials on the film when I viewed it last week but there was just the one of 15 year old John Hill.

As I'm still very much a beginner I'm at a loss as to what to do to find out if there was actually two John Hill's buried on that day.

You have been a great help to me previously which is why I sent the pm.

Chrissie..whilst you were at Matlock..did you actually get out the Ticknall Burials Film???? as in parish records rather than BT's???? It should be` there.

Derek.

If you go to Lichfield, you can probably look for free.
If Matlock has the film on-hand, you wouldn't need to rent it there.
If you do have to rent it, you can rent it thru any LDS FHC and view it there, so if Mattoon Illinois is nearer than Matlock, that would be a better choice.

You can search in the centre column of the familysearch home page for a nearby FHC.

Thank you so much for your replies.

mgnv - thank you for for the little lesson on familysearch, I didn't know about searching like that.

Would I have to go to Stafford to view the films and would they be different from the microfiche I viewed at Matlock which was from the parish records.

At familysearch do a place search of the library catalog for Ticknall - church records. Select, say, the BTs:

Title Bishop's transcripts for Ticknall, 1663-1878
Authors Church of England. Parish Church of Ticknall (Derbyshire) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records in the Lichfield Joint Records Office, Stafford.
Ticknall is also called Tickenhall.
Includes one page for Clake.

then click the view film notes button at top right:
Note Location Film
Baptisms, marriages, burials, 1663-1664, 1673-1676, 1679-1791, 1795-1812. FHL BRITISH Film 428946 Item 3
Ticknall, baptisms, marriages, burials, 1813-1837, baptisms, burials, 1838-1856, baptisms, 1858, 1857-1858, 1857, burials, 1857-1858, baptisms, burials, 1859-1860, baptisms, 1861-1862, 1861-1862, burials, 1862; Calke, baptisms, 1863; Ticknall, baptisms, 1863-1864, burials, 1863-1864, baptisms, burials, 1865, baptisms, 1866, 1865-1866, burials, 1866-1868, baptisms, 1867-1868, 1867-1875, burials, 1869-1875, baptisms, burials, 1876, burials, 1877-1878, 1876-1877, baptisms, 1877-1878, 1877-1878. FHL BRITISH Film 498136

Alternatively, clicking on the Source # link at the bottom of your IGI hits takes you there, since these records were all extracted from the BTs.

You are doing really well then. Bishops Transcripts are copies of the parish records. As you can imagine, every time a record is copied, it is more likely to have errors. (think of it as Chinese whispers lol)

Chrissie,

Have a look at Derek's thread""Who are you looking for in Derbyshire""
Dereks thread is about 4 down on this Tips Page.
Put a message on for Derek to have a look for your John Hill's birth and death dates.

Derek has lots of info for Derbyshire.

Hi Janet,

Thanks for your reply.

As I've not been researching for that long I don't know what Bishop Transcripts are. I asked a member of staff at the records office and she told me the film I was looking at were copied from the parish records. How would I get to view bishop transcripts.

I'm afraid I can't explain it but the IGI info is from the Bishops Transcripts as opposed to the actual PRs. I wonder if the PRs you checked were a copy of the original and perhaps the original contained your Johns birthdate. This could then have been mistranscribed for the BTs.

Could someone please advice me.

From extracted records on familysearch I have found the following for John Hill born in Ticknall, Derbyshire :

christening 19 Feb 1812
death/burial 19 Aug 1827

parents are Thomas Hill and Jane

Also
christening 31 Aug 1823
death/burial 19 Aug 1827

parents William Hill and Sarah

The second John is mine. I have looked at the PR for the burials to see if there was any other info. There is only one record for a John Hill being buried on that day, he was aged 15 but no parents are named.

My William and Sarah were married in 1804, had five children baptised 23 Mar 1808 and another five baptised on 31 Aug 1823, all in Ticknall. On most of the baptism records the ages of the children are given but unfortunately not on Johns.

I don't understand why there are two extracted records, but there is only one in the parish records.

Can any one help me please

Chris
