According to his death certificate my 2x great uncle appears to have died in Pentonville Prison in 1952.
Does anyone know how I can find out why he was there?
His name was George Thomson Hackland born 1877 Orkney. He was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy until around 1914 and was a Firewatcher in Glasgow during WW2.

Aileen, if you have the actual date of death you might try looking in local newspapers.
A death in prison would probably have been reported and may well say what he was in for

If I were you I would write to the prison enclosing a S.A.E. and ask if they can help you - they are bound to have records going back to when the prison was first opened
