In Prison on the 1911 Census

I have found a relative on the 1911 Census which confirms he was in prison on that date - I know that he was in and out of prison for a while - I just wondered if there was anywhere I could find or obtain details about his prison record?

Any ideas? Thanks

Contact the local Record Office for the area in which the prison was based - and maybe also the one in the area in which your relative lived.

They should be able to tell you where the court and prison records are. They may hold them, they may be at the prison, they may be in the local library etc.

Usually they're not transcribed so you or someone would then need to visit to look through them. (I've trawled through a few years' worth of Quarter Sessions Records at my local RO. They don't contain a huge amount of info but at least will tell you what he did!)
