Thanks for your reply Rob, but I don't know in which area in London the marriage took place. Sorry to sound so vague, but it is a long story and I was just trying to find a shortcut to resolving a mystery. But it seems there isn't one !

Thanks

Maggie

Maggie,

Is it worth contacting the Register Office concerned? You obviously have some info to help you decide which is "the right one". If you tell them, they won't charge if it doesn't match.
Some offices are more helpful than others though. (I'm sure if you say here which area(s) you are looking at, people will let you know how helpful they are)

I think Mag*nolia was hoping to find the actual images so save her from having to order certificates that turn out to be the wrong ones. With any of the indexes you still have to decide which certificate MAY be the one you want and if there are lots for the name you are looking for then it can indeed be a very expensive exercise.

Hi Kathleen,
Yes, I did mean the indexes - similar to what is on free BMD - except they are available to the last quarter, will include the dates Maggie is looking for, and once the Records office has been joined - free!
Photocopying may cost 10p - 20p per copy, but you can just jot the names/references down.

I think Maggie means that the INDEX to births, marriages and deaths is available at the local Records Office - NOT the actual certificates. If the name is quite common and you do not know the exact date you will still have to take a chance on which certificates you order, which you can still do using Ancestry or Findmypast.

Hi Maggie,
London marriages will be in the births marriages & deaths in YOUR local records office - most records offices hold all BMD's.
I found my grandmother's death (1987) in Cornwall in the Hampshire records office.
I also found my g grandfather's London birth (1862) in the Hampshire records office.
Suffolk marriages were there - I did most of my family BMD's in the local records office years ago - before it was all on computer!!
It means trawling through microfiche, but if you know the approximate date and name it's easier, and a lot cheaper than sending for certificates 'on the off chance'.

Magnolia
Do you know the area in London?
Different records are kept at different places. The LMA have a lot of London records but other records are held at Westminster Archives and Guildhall.

Thanks Maggie

Unfortunately the records I need are in London and I am 300 miles away.

If you live in England, any local records office will have the BMD's for the whole country on microfiche, up until at least 3 months ago. They're free to view, but you will have to join the records office - whch is also free. I think you'll need 2 forms of identification, one of which must be a utility bill.

No, I don't think there is anywhere else you can look for such a recent marriage. You will have to buy the certificate. Who are you looking for. If the couple involved are still alive and you want to send a private message with the details I'll have a look on Ancestry for you.

Is there anywhere I can find London Marriage records apart from Ancestry and FreeBMD?

I am looking for one from 1945 onwards, and I am sending for certificates one at a time in the hope I hit the right one eventually. Very expensive !

Hope someone can advise me please

Regards

Maggie
