In the late 1700s/early 1800s I have found several bapts or marriages which have taken place in small villages in West Cumberland, then appear to have been duplicated at St Michael,Workington.
Has anybody any idea why?

Not sure about the marriages but maybe the baptisms in two places were to please both sets of grandparents. They shouldn't really have bp'd twice but it did happen.

On second thoughts; were the marriages really recorded in both places or was one in a Banns book? Just a thought.

If one of the bridal pair werent of the same parish then banns had to be published at both churches.People often got around this by trying to establish a six week residenecy in the same parish ie would take a suitcase to the brides home and then give the same address for residency

Thank you both for your thoughts.
All the events are recorded twice on Familysearch & most of them are in both sets of parish records which I have seen.
I did wonder if perhaps St Michael was the "mother" church for the area although in most cases Cockermouth is nearer. It´s difficult to imagine how tiny these places were when you see them now.
It will probably remain a mystery.
