Replacing FTM 2009 with 2010

Mayfield Report 17 May 2010 17:15

Hi all,
Can somebody clarify something for me please?

I have the 2010 FTM to load, at present I am using FTM 2009.
Before I start, does anyone know if it will load separately and thus allow me to select and transfer the data I want to move to the new program or will it simply replace the existing one (hopefully not loosing anything!) and delete the original?

I do have the 2009 data backed up to a remote drive but I’m not sure that data will transfer back to the computer if the original program is not there. I can save the data as a gedcom, but of course that will not hold the photos linked to the entries.
I just would like to know before I start, it might save me some work if I am prepared!

Regards,
Mayfield.

Thank you Ann, that’s what I thought would be the logical way for it to operate, but having installed upgrades to other types of programs like security suites in the past that lost all my settings I thought I would check to be sure!
Thanks again,
Regards,
Mayfield.

It would appear that FTM 2010 installs as a new program and does not replace any earlier versions. That would tend to imply that any program specific settings - as opposed to the data in your tree file, which remains untouched - may need to be re-set.

Data from 2006 or earlier version also needs to be converted, data from versions 2008/9 does not.

Have a look on here for more info.

Thank you for the link Inspector.

As you say it should install alongside 2009 which I can uninstall later to save disc space if I want to.
Before posting I did do a search on Genes to see if the question had been asked before. D’oh! I should have thought to check the FAQs on Ancestry myself, oh dear yet another senior moment I fear!
Your help is much appreciated.

Mayfield.
