Hi Gai,

No you don't - I'm not a member and they sent me the invite because I have a subscription to the 1911 census and you have to do it through them.
I'll send you the link for registration in a pm as it's not allowed on here.
Regards
Barry

Hi Lottie,
I too live in NSW and recently Findmypast sent me an invite to their Findmypast in Australia Roadshow. It's on in Sydney next Monday 24th May 7pm-9.30pm at Ryde RSL - here's what they sent me:

Dear Barry,

Findmypast is coming to Australia in May for the Findmypast in Australia Roadshow, organised by Unlock the Past. Elaine Collins, findmypast’s director of content acquisition, will be in Australia for a week of events to promote the fantastic range of services that findmypast offers.

As well as the exciting developments on findmypast, Elaine will also talk about the other websites which are part of brightsolid online publishing: 1911census, scotlandspeople, ancestorsonboard, genesreunited and friendsreunited. Elaine will be on hand to tell you what these essential resources can offer you and how to get the most out of them.

The details of the roadshow are as follows:

* Adelaide - Wednesday 19 May - evening public meeting - 7pm-9.30pm at West Adelaide Function Centre (Football Club), 57 Milner Road, Richmond
* Melbourne - Thursday 20 May - evening public meeting - 7pm-9.30pm at Veneto Club Melbourne, 191 Bulleen Road, Bulleen
* Brisbane - Friday 21 May - evening public meeting - 7pm-9.30pm at Broncos Leagues Club, 98 Fulcher Road, Red Hill
* Nambour - Saturday 22 May - Genealogy Sunshine Coast Seminar - 9.00am-1.00pm at Nambour State High School (auditorium), 1 Carroll Street, Nambour
* Brisbane - Sunday 23 May - Queensland Family and Local History Fair (exhibiting all day) at Donald Simpson Centre, 172 Bloomfield Street, Cleveland. Normal fair entry charge only applies for this event
* Sydney - Monday 24 May - evening public meeting - 7pm-9.30pm at Ryde RSL (Grand Pittwater Function Centre), Cnr Pittwater Road and Magdala Roads, North Ryde

If you’d like to book a place at the roadshow please click here. The cost is $10, paid on entry.

It is not essential to book ahead but it helps for the following reasons:

* It guarantees you a seat if venue is pre-booked to capacity
* It enables us to email you any last minute updates
* It gives the organisers a good indication beforehand of seating numbers

Unlock the Past will also attend and exhibit at these events. You can learn more about the exciting new initiatives, including the planned expo in Sydney in October, the National Roadshow in November and the History and Genealogy Conference Cruise in March 2011. You can also learn about the Unlock the Past publishing program, the proposed Handbook and regional roadshows. Shauna Hicks' new books will be on sale at the meetings.

Special offers from findmypast and Gould Genealogy & History will be available at all meetings.

We look forward to seeing you at the roadshow.

The findmypast team

Hope this is of interest
Barry

Thanks everyone for your replies :)
It is difficult as well because a lot of the courses at libraries and community colleges appear to be aimed at retirees. I am 33 and work normal business hours. Hopefully I can find something suitable at the SAG.
Many thanks and kind regards

Hi Lottie,

The society of Australian Genealogists are meant to be very good and reasonable subscriptions rates. You can also visit them in Sydney were they have a library and apparently subscriptions to Ancestry and FMP.

There website is www.sag.org.au and if you go I would be interested in your opinion of their facilities. Another friend is going to join as they are having a Family Tree maker focus day in July (i think) and she is interested in see what they have to say.

I know that Parramatta city council holds seminars are the Parramatta Heritage throughout the year to help people trace their family history. Maybe try your local library and see if they do the same.

Hi Lottie

The LDS website (familysearch) has online courses available but unfortunately there don't appear to be any concentrating on Australia.

Keep meaning to have a look at them myself as they may have general advice which is relevant anywhere in the world.

Sorry couldn't be more help

Jane

Hello
Can anyone recommend a geneology course in Sydney, Australia or online? I would prefer a short course to start with. I work full-time and it is difficult to find something outside of business hours.
Thanks :)
