George Hindmarch married Ellen Thompson nee Learmouth 3-5-1874.Newcastle upon tyne. Ellen is shown as a widow in the 1881 census.
I cannot find a death record for George even though I have checked the indexes thoroughly using Hindmarch and Hindmarsh.
Both lived in Newcastle upon Tyne most of their lives.
Can anybody help or point me in the right direction.
I have been trying for 3 years to solve this 'little' problem.

Just a suggestion

Maybe they agreed on the poor man's 'divorce'? Or he did a runner?

Sometimes a couple separated by agreement and a wife would suggest she was a widow (or state correctly as married) on censuses to keep up appearances.....A poor man's divorce!

I have one couple who did this. He was living round the corner from his wife for two censuses with the 'other woman' listed as his wife. The 'wife' died and then he did...And his real wife registered the death as his wife!!!!

And then there is the possibility he did a runner and the wife chose to call herself a widow, no one was going to check!
After 7 years without contact or any proof that he was still alive a woman could legally call herself a widow and then remarry.

If I was you I would search the 1881 and beyond for him....You may be suprised!

Another option is that his death was registered but not where you expect...Working away?
Or where you expect but the local registration details never made it to the GRO....In that case contacting the local Register Office may find it.

Hi, Sorry I've not got back earlier. Domestic duties overcame me.

George Hindmarshwas born in Gt Lumley Durham 1838 son of Charles and Louisa nee Bush Hindmarsh..
George md 1st wife Elizabeth Ann Smith 1863. They had two children Charles and Elizabeth Ann. His wife died in 1873. The children went to live with relatives.
He md Ellen Thompson( nee Learmouth ) iin 1874. Ellen had two children with her first husband Margaret Jane and Matthew.
George and Ellen had two children James c1877 and Louisa 29th May 1878.

I have traced them all through the census's, although Louisa is not with her mother in the 1881 and I cannot find her anywhere.
In the 1881census Ellen calls herself a widow.
I have looked to see if George has left her but there is no sign of him.

I have sent for two death certs to try and find him, one in 1877 the other in 1889 alas not the right ones.
