I've been fortunate that this has happened only once to me.

When I realised the ,mistake I edited my gt gt grandmothers name to the correct one. For those above her I just entered NK for names and place of birth and entered 0 for year of birth.

Once I received certificates which confirmed names of those above I simply added the new info. Much easier than deleting several descendants and re-adding them.

Just to confirm, you can only delete a name from your GR tree if it is at the top or the bottom or has no other branches attached to it. For example, you can remove or delete the child of a relation.

However, if you have added the wrong father, you would need to remove any children first before deleting him. You will see a message saying you cannot delete a relation if other names are attached to that person. You will need to look at your tree and either remove names from the bottom upwards or from the top down depending on where the relation is that you wish to remove.

It is sometimes easier to amend the incorrect person to show the correct details.

If none of this is practical, then you could ask GR to fix the error for you, or use a commercial program to correct the relationships that are incorrect and upload your file back to GR by way of a gedcom.

I am confused........I have got a person with 15 ancestors and 249 descendants. Deleting ancestor number 1 is not allowed because it would leave the branch unlinked. Deleting descendant 16 is also not allowed for the same reason, it would leave the 249 unlinked. Does that last line "or else you have to remove / delete all other dependents or ancestors to this person first" simply mean just delete the whole 249 starting at the bottom of the tree and then go back and re-enter the whole lot but this time in the right place?

On GR, you can only delete a person that has a single link to the rest of the tree. The reason you can't delete someone with an attached branch, beit ancestors or descendants, is because the branch would become unlinked to the rest of your tree, and, unlike commercial tree programs, there is no facility to re-attach it back to it's correct place.

You either do as suggested and edit the incorrect name to be the correct one, or else you have to remove / delete all other dependents or ancestors to this person first.

Depends on how many people you have attached.
EG
Derek Smith Father William Smith(wrong) just edit to the correct name.
Or add the correct father as a partner to William's wife. Now click on Derek and change parents.
Now delete William and everyone attached to him except wife.
Now change Derek's mother the same way.

Ok, my computer was running slow, so my 'change parents' button is now ok.

But still won't let me delete a relation that I've put in twice by mistake.

Any ideas?

Hi

Hope this is the right board for this. But I've just found out that the parents I've got for one of my ancestors is wrong, have tried to change the parents but it won't let me.

It keeps saying because its linked to other people I can't change it, also the 'change parents' button is greyed out.

Help! Jacqui
