I've recently upgraded to paid membership on genes reunited, when I was a free member I was unable to send messages to other people - my question is that now I'm a paid member I can send messages but if I send a message to a free member - does that mean they wont actually be able to reply?

Hi Emma

Yes, a free member can reply to your message.......but they can't initiate contact.

I am guessing that you have messaged someone and they haven't replied?
Nothing that you can do.
I have stopped messaging members because of this.
When I receive a message I know that they are a paid member or an old contact.

SatNav

Don't quite understand your logic.

You say that you have stopped sending messages because of this. Because of what?

Thank you for letting me know :-) I was worried incase they couldn't reply until they paid!

Hi Emma

you may already know that if you look in you sent box in messages if there is a purple envelope then the recipient of your message has not read it. This could indicate that this member is no longer researching their tree for one reason or another. Sometime messages are read and the member just never replies again for reasons only known to themselves.

Don't get frustrated just move on. Just because we send messages does not mean we have a right to a reply.

oh yes

and be aware that the Messages indication system is not working correctly.

Normally a little envelope should show against messages in the dark green strip above the threads.

This is in additon to you getting an email from GR saying a pm is waiting AND a message being posted on your home page that you have xx messages waiting.

The envelope is useful because you can just glance up at the strip and see if there is a new message.

However, for the last couple of weeks or more ......... either the envelope has been showing ALL the time or NONE of the time

and GR seems unable to solve the problem.

Just click on Messages at regular intervals, and see if there any new ones in there!

Regarding the messages in your Message box ............. especially in Sent

purple ......... message sent, not opened

green .......... message opened (presumably read!)

green with a darker green arrow on it ............... message opened and reply sent.
