need help please re wording on birth certificate

I have a birth certificate which states the mothers name as:

Elizabeth Murray
later Carter
formerly Turner

can someone tell me what they think this means? later Carter? does formerly Turner mean her maiden name?

Formerly ......is maiden name
Later....... could be she was married before

Yes, I thought that as well Julie .. just wondering now why they put later Carter on it?? any ideas?

It probably says "late", which means she was previously a widow.

If you are talking in the Lambeth area...i might have found the marriages

But this is only a guess
