Naval Rankings

Hello does anyone know anything about naval rankings?

I have an ancestors naval record showing the ships he served on, his rank and how much he got paid beween 1803 and 1815.

The ranks are all abbreviated and while I've figured out most of them I'm stuck on what an "arms" was.

Thanks for any help

I would suggest it is" Master at Arms" which is a Royal Navy rank

Plenty of info if you "google"

Thanks George

Had tried googling alsorts but not that

He was down as this for 8 years and then went to AB (presumably able seaman) for about 10 days and then back to "arms".

Dont think it stands for Master At Arms - that would be abreviated to MAA and the title didn't come into force until around 1860.
AB would mean Able Bodied or in other words fully qualified at his job.
