Hi

Does anyoneknow if there is a specific reason why some girls/women were called Queenie?

Thanks in advance.

Probably to do with Queen Victoria. Lots of children in Victorian times bore names to do with the royal family or famous events. I have one with the middle name Pretoria and several named Major as their Christian name. No accounting for taste I suppose. Cx

Thanks. I had thought of that but this girl born between 1905 and 1907 - Victoria had died by then. Appreciate the info though - thanks.

Interesting - I have tried to find out before but two schools of thought - one a nickname and the other as you said. Thanks.

I can't stop laughing. This has crossed my mind before with the names we have now and I just can't imagine it! Kylie and Chanel at the gate talking about Jordan over the road who's just turned 90.

Florence name interesting.

One of our relatives in our family was known by two names, one which was Queenie. I thought Queenie was the nickname but it turns out that was her real name and the ordinary everyday name was her nickname :)

Lol. Thanks both. Obviously no actual answer. After all Jordan has named her daughter Princess so maybe in years to come someone else will have the same question.

A pet form of the affectionate nickname 'Queen'. It was also used as a pet name for Victoria, as the name is heavily linked with that of the English Queen. The word is sourced from the Old English 'cwen', meaning 'woman'.

I always think of someone being given the nickname 'Queenie' because they're a bit strident!! I suppose I think more of Boadecia when I hear the name.

The name Queenie was at its most popular around 1900, and then dropped dramatically after that.

My very first own dog when I was about 8 was called Queenie, as far as I am concerned she was better than The Queen.

I believe Queenie was often the name of the eldest daughter - in charge of the younger ones.

Thanks all - very interesting. I will have a look at the sites mentioned.

Annabel - Found a Queenie Elizabeth born 1909 on FreeBMD funnily enough.

Thanks - maybe that's all there is to it then - a proper name after all.
