'Yes'....... 'some are certainly more helpful than others'.
The Lewisham 'local studies' section at Lewisham Council has been marvellous ....locating 2 of my ancestors graves/sites (1912 & 1924) -plus they've even arranged to show me the exact 'locations' -at their 'Ladywell ' cemetery (in July) - where I plan to leave small memorial plaques (stainless steel) - on a non bio-degradable peg ..... supplied 'free' from my local undertaker here in Aus. (Just had to give them all a plug!!) ...Valerie (WAus)

St Helens has a free searchable website which is brilliant because it has helped me narrow the search for family members

perhaps other councils have the same

Hi Betty
I knew my grandparents and 2 of their daughters were buried in the same cemetery in Enfield during 1930's and 1970's. I wrote to them, giving as much info as I could and a very kind person sent back details of the type of plot, plot numbers and a site map... including one of another relative who I have since researched more.
We paid a visit there last year and although theres no grave stones left now at least I had a good idea of where they would have been and so took photos of the area they were in.

From experience, some cemetaries are more helpful than others!

Hi Betty,

Your county records office may also have them.

I have found a distant cousin through this site and he believed his gt gt grandfather Barnabas was buried in one of Derby's cemetery's but staff had told him he wasn't.

I had a look at the cemetery records for him at Matlock but couldn't find his rellie in the index. When I looked for Barnabas's widow, I found that Barnabas was buried with her.

It's well worth anyone checking cemetery records when they visit their local records office. I have been able to confirm marriages, and also order death certificates knowing for certain they are the right one. On one death certificate I ordered, place of death was given as the workhouse so I couldn't be certain I had the right death. Once I checked the grave register, I knew it was as he was buried with his father in law.

You could try ringing the cemetery - the staff are generally very helpful, but some places charge for look ups - some do it for free
