I can find my grandfather, Frank Wilson in the 1901 and 1911 census returns, but not in 1891. I suppose some people might manage to just slip through the census net? Any help/ advice appreciated. I may have a birth for 1880, but without the 1891 entry can't be sure (1st Nov 1880 Frank Wilson son of Jane Wilson born Durham Prison - no father named). Census and other information so far that I have so is:

1916 Francis Wilson, Gunner, Royal Garrison Artillery, born Seaham Harbour, died France 2nd June

1911 Frank Wilson (born county Durham), wife Ellen and four children living Southwick, Sunderland
1901 Frank Wilson (born Seaham Colliery) boarding in 9, Malaburn Tce,Southwick, Sunderland
Marriage Frank Wilson to Ellen Angus 1901. Frank living 3 Malaburn Tce. aged 21 years.

Many thanks for this, I have found this entry also, and this could be the Jane Wilson and child born in Durham Prison - but can't link to the Frank Wilson 1901, 1911, 1916 without a link at least from the 1891 census. Hence the query. There are various Jane Wilsons from this area, which could be this person in earlier census returns. I haven't made a visit to Durham Record Office (I am in Lancashire) to see what she was in for, or if there was an address pre prison etc

Fathers details on marriage cert are James Wilson, coal miner, deceased
I had assumed that perhaps if you were born in prison, you may not have been told the truth. Another possibility which I considered was a father who died in the Seaham Colliery disaster of 1880, but no miners named Wilson died in this incident. Though if mother unmarried, this would't be a factor

Goodness, you got a long sentence for thieving back then! This Jane may have turned out to be a "carreer criminal". Could you let me have your source for this... it sounds as though it wil mean a trip to Durham, though
A problem is - I assume the Jane who had a baby in Durham Prison in November 1880 had got pregnant outside of prison. But then, you never know!
