Ancestry, Dorset, England, Extracted Parish Record

I happened to search in the above database for a name I'm interested in and came up with a number of entries like this when I searched on the surname Miller:

Text: William Miller & Eliza Tucker 28 Jan 1833
Book: Burialls (Burial)
Collection: Dorset: - Parish Registers

I can't believe that the number of "couples" that were listed were burried together (!) so just what does this mean (person burried + mothers maiden name - seems unlikely)?

Thanks, David.

PS I was actually looking for marriages, or so I thought.

I don't know for sure but I would think it was just naming people who were buried on the same day - not necessarily together in the same grave.

Have you tried the Dorset Online Parish Clerks Project? They have a lot of records and you might be able to find your names there

Kath, thanks for that idea, I hadn't thought of that possibility.

Elizabeth, yes I've been using the Dorset OPC, very useful site, although I've been quite confused at times with inconsistent information between Dorset OPC, Ancestry, IGI, Findmypast etc. Still, if it was easy it wouldn't be so much fun (I keep telling myself!).

For anyone who doesn't know of the Dorset Online Parish Clerks site - lots of parish records, it's here:

http://www.opcdorset.org/index.htm

I even found an 1811 census for one parish I was interested in!

There are OPC sites for quite a few counties, see bottom of above home page for a list.

re the inconsistent information

on IGI ......... you are being careful to accept only Extracted records aren't you?

Submitted records have been sent in by individuals, usually LDS church members, and have no backing documentation. In fact, they are often completely unreliable!

David,

Just a thought, but I know some parishes had books that contained more than one type of event (i.e had marriages as well as burials), rather than having a dedicated book for each. Maybe this is the case (although I thought that would have stopped after 1813 when the new layout came in). It could be that the Ancestry IT system insists that the must enter what type of book it is and maybe it had more burials than marriages, so they put that. Nothing would surprise me with Ancestry.

I think that they are marriages as this indicates

Better late than never "maybe", but thanks to those who posted after I'd thanked the first posters!
