wills proved before 1858 were usually proved at the local ecclesiastical court eg Richmond which covers parts of Yorkshire and those wills I think can be read in Leeds.
The Borthwick Institute in York also has many wills (google Borthwick and it gives you the details)

many record offices hold copies of wills proved at the local ecclesiastical court

Thanks for your help, K and Jonesey. Most appreciated. I'm quite excited as it's the will of my 3 x ggrandfather and could help me with tracing his children.

Kind regards

Libby

I have found a reference to a will dated 1840 in Yorkshire, on FMP. Please can someone tell me how I order the will? Where do I order it, and how easy is the process? Is it done online, by post, or, as I live in Yorkshire would it be easier to apply in person? Pre 1858 wills are a new experience for me.

Many thanks.
