Marriage Listing Cross-Referencing

Freebmd is great, but it lists a quarter, when an event is registered....not the month when it occured.
If the event happened eg. 30th March, there is a good chance that it will be registered in the next quarter, - April / May /June

If the event,( B or D ) happened towards the end of December, it could possibly be registered the following quarter, which would therefore mean in the following year.
Marriages, I believe are registered in the quarter of the ceremony. Deaths should be registered within 5 days ( unless there is an inquest) and births should be registered within 42 days, ...but it is always wise to extend these boundaries when searching.

Thanks all.

I received a copy of my GF's birth cert today, it confirmed the maiden name of his mother, who as Gwyn suggested, was married twice.

I have now matched both GGF & GGM marriage record. It seems there were some shenanigans before the marriage, which resulted in an official union, based on the age of their oldest child as given on the 1911 census. Of course, those details my be a bit off.

FreeBMD is a great tool, because it lists the month in which an event occurred.

The one thing I have found, is that every single piece of evidence needs to be cross-reff'd with another.

I can't seem to match any census record for any branch of the family earlier than 1881. That's my next challenge.

Or sometimes the transcriber has had difficulty with the vol and page refs. There are some records on FreeBMD with gaps and asterisks so you can't find the match for those by clicking on the blue number.

However, you can then search for the district, year and quarter and see if you can spot any likely matches that way.

Sometimes you do not get a match on expected names.
This may be because you have Ggrandmother's maiden name from her child's birth certificate, but she may have had a previous marriage ( or more! ) before marrying your Ggrandfather.
If she has fairly distinctive forenames, you can search for your Grandfather marrying someone with those names, but don't search a surname, leave that box blank.

Do you want help searching for the marriage?

Great, thanks very much.

Another Q - does this method often fail?

Cheers,

Smiler.

If the page number and volume number is the same then yes.

I am trying to find a marriage certificate for my GGF/GGM.

Would I be right is the assumption that if I find a listing for a month/year/district for my GGF's name, then the same month/year/district for my GGM's maiden name, the result is a likely match?

Thanks is advance.

Smiler.
