I also use it before visiting any of my families old homes.
Last month a convoy of us went to find a farm our relatives lived in in 1900.
They were amazed that i knew which turn to make as we (3 cars) encroached on the property. What I DIDN'T notice was that there wasn't turning room on the lane before the Private Land sign !!!!!
Also discovered that my son parked his ghastly yellow car on my drive whilst I was away on holiday. He wasn't allowed to before as it frequently leaked oil ! Caught out by camera !!!!!!!

I always try to see if my ancestor's addresses survive....

Sadly alot of them are in 'London' and were therefore redeveloped after WW2 bombing. So even if the original street name survives the view is of more modern housing.

As an aside....My street view has only my house with it's bin on the front drive (Lowering the tone of the neighbourhood :-) ). They must have filmed late in the day on a Wednesday so before collecton day on a Thursday.....That will teach me to be organised! lol

Yes, I've used google streetview a number of times to see whether the old addresses exist and had great success with most - though not with all.
Its fascinating to see where your ancestors were born/lived/died etc.
Some places exist as houses, some of mine are now shops and one in particular in London is now underneath sainsburys!

As SimonSez in his note - do not rely on the house numbers google shows as they're often wrong. I work along the street to try and find a property with a legible number and then zoom in. Once I know that number I will then work along the street in the correct direction and find the property.

the Glasgow Story site has a searchable database of the 1914 valuation rolls so if you know the Address you may find a family member listed.......

Hi
Yes I use it very often, it has proved very useful to see if ancestors houses and streets still survive. I would not take too much notice of the house number though, Google does not appear to match the correct house to the house number very often, but still ,its an excellent tool. I used google a couple of weeks ago to view a street before I went to visit it live. It was very strange , I got the deja vous feeling that I had been there before..........I had on google !

Hi all,

Just wondering if many people here use the google street view?

I use it a lot as I live in Australia and my family came from Scotland, so it is nice to see (in some instances) the places where they were born, married and often died at.

I feel a bit sad when the address no longer exists and where a house/s would have been is a busy road etc. I know progress has to happen but it's a shame some of the old buidlings could not have been preserved etc.

Either way I find it a useful tool, even to check the spelling of a street when the handwriting on a certificate cannot be deciphered.
