Debbie

just to add that over the last 7 or so years I have seen several "professionally researched" trees, costing much money, that have been proved to be completely wrong by the helpers on here, working for free!

I've also seen ancestors being found by peopole on these boards where professional researchers had taken much money and then declared the person was not to be found.

This is not to say that all researchers are unreliable ....... I'm sure that many are perfectly reliable

but as someone said ............. you don't know that they have checked everything,

you can do it ...... use the expertise available on these boards!

and just work at your own speed.

BUT do please use your money to buy as many certificates as you can. That would be much better.

Hi Debbie,
there is no-one more of a technaphobe than me!! I started with my husbands grandparents and went on from there, the census are a mine of information and funny in some places, the buz you get when you find someone is amazing. Take your time, and use the community, they are the most helpful people you could wish to meet. I found the community language strange at first, what was a thread ? etc and got into hot water by posting the same thread on two sites Woops!!, but don't worry, just keep on trying. Good Luck.. M.

Shirley's comment re 'Kosher' had me laughing :-)

OH's tree is 100% Jewish and the families obviously originate abroad.

One of OH's contacts paid a very large amount of money to a researcher for a line of the tree that came at one point from Holland.....He had said he had expertise in Jewish/Dutch research.

Well within a very short time OH had knocked a big hole into this researcher's research......Someone said to have married in Holland at age 12 who actually married in England at age 18!!!

The info for the line looks very well researched, sources ect recorded, but that one basic error makes OH very wary of believing anything given.

I have used researchers for my lines but only where I couldn't get to the original documents myself, or didn't have the expertise, and then only when the researcher had come personally recommended.

Be careful out there....In the world of paid researchers :-)

Hey Debbie, i am also quite new at all this. But let me tell you, you wont need to hire anyone. The people on here are absolutley fantastic. They are extremely kind and generous with thier time. Just start at the beginning, give them all the details of what you are looking for and i promise you, your tree will be blossoming in no time! As Shirley said "Go on, give it another try"... you wont regret it! Go for it! Susan xxx

Well personally i wouldn't hire anyone .,How can you be sure the info they give you is kosher unless you can see the paper trail,They can be very expensive too
The fun in doing your tree is surely in doing it yourself. You can take it as slowly as you want too there's no pressure from anyone,Start with what you know ie yourself and siblings if you have them , you will have your birth cert which will show your parents and then you can get their marriage and then their births etc . as you work backwards you will hit the 1911 census and from then back to the 1901 and then back from there.

This to me is my hobby which ceases to be that if i get someone else to do it .

If you need help you can always ask on the threads for look ups.
it will involve some expense in buying certs cos you cant stay on the right track without them is my opinion

Go on give it another try!! we all started from scratch and floundered in the beginning not sure what we doing or where to look.

Debbie

How far have you got with your tree? Have you started with yourself and gone backwards one step at a time and bought certificates on the way to prove that you have the right people? That's the only way to do it.

If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast then ask on here. Tell us exactly how far you have got (your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc.) and I'm sure people will be able to help.

Hi I have been trying to put together my tree I am a member of a couple of sites as I thought I could do it myself but this is just not something I am very good at , so I am looking for someone to help or even to advise me were to look to hire someone. I have tried and sadly after being in hospital have decided it is bigger than me.
If anyone feels they can help me, please pm me to discuss further Thank you to all who have given me advice in the past regards and sincere thanks Deb
