I have also found prisoners shown with initials only


I have also found some where neither names or initials are given ........... just birth year and birth place





it's always worthwhile, as a last resort, to try searching on birth year +/- 5, and birth place and county to try to bring up such records

Just had a quick look and the same holds true for 1891/1901 it seems. and 71/61/51

Came across this the other day by chance,

a large number of inmates of asylums on the 1881 census ( not looked at others) are only identified by initials,

eg if you put in A E you would get:

Gender: Female
Where born: Roxwell, Essex, England

Civil parish: South Weald
County/Island: Essex
Country: England

You do in nearly all cases get the place of birth and occupation on the image ...so it may be worth considering if you can't find someone who you know to be alive in 1881.
